The UEFA Nations League was brought into existence in 2018. The planning started way back in 2013, but it actually took five years for it to come to fruition. Once the 2018 World Cup was over and done with, the Nations League started in the following September, once the domestic club season had begun in Europe. So, what exactly is the Nations League?

The Nations League is a number of things. The first is that it is a replacement for the International friendlies that normally take place during the football season. This means that there are fewer meaningless internationals during the season, which often feel like a burden to players and fans alike, and more matches that actually mean something.
